Lynn's Pollution Map
Lynn is an environmental justice city overburdened by pollution. On this map, we display some of the coastal contributors to the pollution of Lynn Harbor and Nahant Bay.
The Win Waste Saugus incinerator facility has the only remaining unlined ash dump in the state, which seeps mercury, cadmium, lead, and arsenic into the salt marshes and Lynn Harbor. The incinerator itself is underperforming as it is the oldest one of its kind in the country, harming the health and environment of surrounding communities.
The leachate collected at the ash dump is sent to the Lynn Water Treatment facility. The leachate contains heavy metals that aren't removed or adequately treated before being dumped into the Lynn Harbor.
Further east, we find the illegal Stacey's Brook sewage outfall on King's Beach, the most polluted beach in the state. Even during dry weather, raw sewage spills out at this location due to a combination of broken pipes and illicit connections in Lynn and Swampscott.
