King's Beach
Sewage Outfall

King’s Beach is the most polluted beach in Massachusetts. It has been closed 91% of days in Summer 2023.

Lynn & Swampscott’s sewer pipes leak raw sewage into Stacey Brook, which flows year-round onto King’s Beach. This causes elevated fecal bacteria at King’s Beach and Nahant Bay, even during dry weather.

Lynn and Swampscott say they’re committed to fixing the pipes, but they are considering two alternatives: extending the outfall pipe to release contaminated water in Nahant Bay, or building a UV disinfection treatment plant. These options would cost millions and take years to build. These ideas won’t fix the old, cracked sewer pipes, which will continue to decay and leak sewage into the stormwater systems.

The sewage outfall is illegal. For years, Lynn and Swampscott have been under EPA Consent Decrees to eliminate the contamination and comply with the Clean Water Act.

We deserve a clean beach. We need a comprehensive infrastructure plan to repair the broken pipes and illicit connections. Let's save this magnificent natural resource.
